Market Insight: Nifty Slips < 23,950, IT & Auto Drag | 2 September 2026

News-02-09-2026-01

Indian equities remained under pressure on Wednesday as rising crude oil prices and surging global bond yields weighed on sentiment. The Nifty slipped below 23,950, while the Sensex lost nearly 374 points. IT stocks bore the sharpest losses, reflecting sensitivity to higher yields that reduce the attractiveness of future earnings. Auto stocks also fell sharply, led by Eicher Motors and Bajaj Auto, as weak demand outlook combined with higher input costs.

On the other hand, Oil & Gas and PSU banks outperformed, benefiting from elevated crude realizations and value buying. Despite the headline weakness, institutional flows were supportive — FIIs net bought ₹6,688 crore and DIIs added ₹2,813 crore, showing confidence in valuations even as indices corrected.

Globally, US markets traded mixed: the Dow gained 0.4%, Nasdaq dipped 0.1%, and S&P 500 was flat. Brent crude settled at $95.13/bbl, while gold rose 1.57% to $4,416/oz as investors sought safe havens. The rupee closed at 94.97/USD, marginally weaker.
