Market Insight: Bears Return, Nifty Slips Below 22,800 | 28 Sept 2026

News-28-09-2026-01

Indian equities witnessed a sharp selloff on Monday as rising crude oil prices, persistent foreign fund outflows, elevated U.S. bond yields, and growing geopolitical uncertainty triggered broad-based risk aversion across markets. The sharp decline erased Friday’s recovery gains and pushed benchmark indices to their weakest levels in nearly six months.

Markets opened under pressure and selling intensified throughout the session as investors reacted negatively to renewed concerns surrounding the U.S.-Iran standoff and the potential impact on global energy supplies. Brent crude surged above $108 per barrel during the day, reviving fears of imported inflation and margin pressure across multiple sectors.

The weakness was broad-based. Banking, PSU banks, metals, infrastructure, and financial stocks bore the brunt of the selling, while broader markets also witnessed heavy damage. Investor sentiment remained fragile as the combination of expensive crude, foreign selling, and weak global markets significantly reduced risk appetite.

Market breadth remained overwhelmingly negative. Nearly all Sensex constituents ended lower, and 47 of the 50 Nifty stocks closed in the red. The correction extended beyond large caps, with the Nifty Midcap 100 and Nifty Smallcap 100 indices posting substantial losses, indicating widespread liquidation rather than sector-specific weakness.

One of the biggest concerns for investors was the decisive breach of the psychologically important 23,000 level on the Nifty. After successfully defending this support during the previous week, the index fell sharply below it, suggesting that sentiment has deteriorated materially in the short term.

At the closing bell, the Sensex settled at 72,771.72, down 1,124.02 points (-1.52%), while the Nifty 50 plunged 360.25 points (-1.56%) to close at 22,780.25. The Bank Nifty ended at 54,471.65, declining 1,108.75 points (-1.99%), reflecting intense pressure across financial stocks.

Sector Performance

Outperformers

Even in a weak market, a few defensive pockets remained relatively resilient:

  • Dr. Reddy’s Laboratories was among the notable gainers.
  • Infosys displayed relative strength compared with the broader market.
  • HDFC Life managed to close in positive territory.

Underperformers

  • PSU Banks emerged as the worst-performing segment, falling 3.24%.
  • Banking and financial stocks faced aggressive selling.
  • Metal stocks witnessed heavy profit booking.
  • Infrastructure and capital goods stocks remained under pressure.
  • Adani Enterprises, Jio Financial Services, Bajaj Auto, Larsen & Toubro, Power Grid and Adani Ports featured among key laggards.

Institutional Flow

FIIs:  Net Sell: ₹3,693.93 crore on the previously available session.

DIIs: Net Buy: ₹2,838.17 crore on the previously available session.

Insight:  Foreign investors continue reducing exposure amid rising crude prices, higher global yields, and geopolitical uncertainty. Domestic institutional buying is still providing support, but Monday’s fall demonstrated that DII inflows alone may not be sufficient to offset persistent foreign outflows when external risks intensify.

Technical Structure for Tuesday (29 Sept 2026)

NIFTY 50

  • Support: 22,700 – 22,650
  • Major Support: 22,500
  • Resistance: 22,900 – 23,000
  • Major Resistance: 23,200

Trend Read:  The breakdown below 23,000 has weakened the short-term structure significantly. Unless Nifty quickly reclaims 23,000, bears may continue to dominate near-term price action.

BANK NIFTY

  • Support: 54,300 – 54,000
  • Major Support: 53,500
  • Resistance: 54,800 – 55,000
  • Major Resistance: 55,500

Trend Read:  Bank Nifty experienced a sharp breakdown and closed below multiple short-term support zones. Any recovery attempt must first sustain above 55,000 to improve sentiment.

Options View — Bearish

  • Significant damage occurred after Nifty slipped below 23,000.
  • Put writers are expected to shift lower toward the 22,500 zone.
  • Volatility is likely to remain elevated.
  • Traders may continue favoring defensive positioning until global risks ease.

Insight : Options positioning is likely to become more defensive after Monday’s decline. The market now requires strong institutional buying or positive external triggers before meaningful bullish positions can return.

Strategy — How to Navigate Now

Intraday / Option Buyers

  • Avoid aggressive bottom-fishing.
  • Focus on risk management over return maximization.
  • Trade only high-conviction setups with strict stop losses.

Swing Traders (1–3 Weeks)

  • Reduce exposure in weak sectors.
  • Wait for confirmation before deploying fresh capital.
  • Monitor crude oil, FII flows, and global market sentiment.

Long-Term Investors

  • Do not panic during market corrections.
  • Continue staggered accumulation in fundamentally strong businesses.
  • Maintain asset allocation discipline and avoid emotional decisions.

Final Take

Monday marked a decisive shift in market sentiment. The breakdown below Nifty 23,000 and the sharp 1,100-point decline in the Sensex indicate that investors are increasingly concerned about rising crude oil prices, geopolitical tensions, and ongoing foreign selling.

Key factors to watch going forward:

  1. Brent crude movement above $108 per barrel.
  2. Developments in the U.S.-Iran situation.
  3. FII selling intensity.
  4. Nifty’s ability to hold above 22,700.
  5. Banking sector stability after the sharp correction.

The market has entered a more fragile phase, and caution should remain the dominant strategy until benchmark indices reclaim key resistance levels and global risks begin to moderate.
